Anuradha Mukherji is an assistant professor of Urban and Regional Planning at East Carolina University. She received her PhD in architecture from the University of California at Berkeley in the fields of disaster planning and housing policy and development; a master's from Texas A&M University at College Station, and a diploma in Architecture from the Center for Environmental Planning and Technology in Ahmedabad, India. Her work focuses on the ability of communities to embed disaster risk reduction into the planning of cities and regions, and on the sociopolitical institutions that shape community recovery and the built environment after a disaster.

Her current research includes a study of pre-disaster hazard mitigation plan implementation in coastal North Carolina; an investigation of the developmental impacts of a federal buyout program implemented in Pitt County, North Carolina after Hurricane Floyd; and a study of land-use change as a disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation strategy in the coastal areas of Japan impacted by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. She has also collaborated on a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded research project with faculties from multiple universities to assess the mobilization and use of community capacities for shelter needs in Port-au-Prince after the January 2010 quake in Haiti.

Her research has been funded by the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership through an Abe Fellowship and a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship, by the Asia Pacific Network, the National Science Foundation, and the American Association of University Women through an American Fellowship. Her doctoral dissertation "Negotiating Housing Recovery in Post-Earthquake Urban Kutch, India" received Special Recognition for the 2009 GPEIG Gill-Chin Lim Award For Best Dissertation on International Planning by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP), and an Honorable Mention for the 2009 Samuel H. Prince Dissertation Award by the International Sociological Association's Research Committee on Disasters.
